Williamstown Famine Conference

A conference on Famines in Ireland with emphasis on Connaught will take place in Williamstown Parish Hall, Williamstown, Co Galway on Saturday 27 September, commencing at 10am and ending at 4pm. This is part of a series of Famine conferences in County Galway facilitated by Galway County Council.

Williamstown Heritage Society are giving a talk on "The Little Famine of 1879/80,and it's devastating effects on our parish". Letters from the local famine relief committee of that time imploring aid from The Mansion House Committee in Dublin,  for the starving local people,will play a big part in the talk. Also there will be personal histories of local people who were forced to emigrate to USA because of this famine.

There will be talks on "Workhouses" , "Landed estates of Galway and North Roscommon", "Famine in Slieve Aughty area" and ""Lesser known Irish Famines"

The day will both commence and end with a snack and there will also be a substantial meal served during the day.
The fee for the day is €10 (€7 unwaged)
